Safety In the Workplace

I am really very lucky that I do have a job that I enjoy. I know that I moan about the travelling and the childcare...but really I am looked after in my job. We always have health and safety checks, we have our allocated break times and I also work on a flexi-system which is great with having the kids as you can imagine. Some people aren't as lucky to be working in jobs that they enjoy, and worse still they are working in hazardous conditions. With that in mind I have put together a little list of things that you can do to ensure your own safety at work.

1. Keep Tidy

Sounds like a really obvious one. Don't leave stacks of filing or boxes around your desk. These can easily be a hazard to someone or even yourself. I have never had a fall at work, but I do know someone who did in a place where I used to work. She tripped and badly hurt her ankle, leading to work injury compensation. I think it's important to look after ourselves and take responsibility for our own safety whenever we can.

2. Lift Safely

Sometimes in our jobs we must lift. Even if it is just a stack of papers or something much heavier, we must make sure that we do it carefully to avoid injury. I used to work in an exams office, and carrying the big loads of exam papers was sometimes really difficult. Make sure you follow the guidelines on the NHS website, keep the load close to your waist, don't bend your back and know your limits - don't lift anything that you don't feel you can manage, and always ask a collaegue to help if you are in any way unsure.

3. Machinery

If you work with any machinery (even if it is just a basic guillotine in an office) make sure that you know how to use it. It is your employer's responsibility to ensure that any equipment is in full working order, but you should only use equipment that you have been trained to use. Make sure you attend your training and if in doubt don't use the machine. Don't take risks, and follow all health and safety guidelines provided. If you need to wear and safety goggles or work wear then make sure than you do.
